Pianoteq 5 clear bass preset
I am convinced that CP4 true mono samples are of great benefit in band situations using just one monitor or amp, but probably mostly in the mix.

Generally I think stereo on stage is mainly justified for three reasons: for the piano sound player to create the illusion of a true piano with high low end separation like the real instrument (the comfort factor) avoiding the phase cancellation issues and loss of quality using only one output (the mono setting in nord is a working compromise, but opinions are divided here) and for true stereo demanding effects like ping pong, full chorus etc.

The stereo image obviously gets lost with the distance, therefore it does not matter so much for the audience, which is the same as for an acoustic from a distance. The speakers in the yamaha have a vertical output direction so the player will get the most of it and not the audience, but when using it in a church the wall reflections are more than ok to compensate it to a certain degree.

Even my pair of Yamaha DXR 10 is not doing this Job 100% right.

This explains for me by the way why CP4 has no string resonance, they use the same CFX samples in the TransAcustic series with true strings so they don't need it (just kidding).īottom line: when you intend to gig with a NP3 having the same experience as with a piano with build-in speakers, plan for a long monitor/PA test run. They even use the soundboard of TransAcustic pianos now as resonant speakers and perform string resonance in these models for the sample unit in these by using the resonance of the internal true strings instead of simulation algorithms. You just have to look at the effort Yamaha spends in its AvantGrand series regarding number of speakers, resonance boards etc. For audiences in venues listening to nord piano sounds this is different again because of the different distance and this explains why audiences are often more satisfied with nord sounds than the player at his position.Īs a conclusion, I am convinced that yamaha knows this and took measures to supply the player with the most accurate experience for his listening position as part of their sample processing and speaker tuning a thing Nord cannot care for since none of their boards have built-in speakers. This leads me to the conclusion apart from speaker quality considerations that headphones create that illusion better than speakers since they reproduce the ambient environment captured during sampling of nord pianos faithfully wheras onboard speakers are not fully capable of this since the room model behind nord samples does not fit to the players distance. The point is, when compared with the internal piano sounds, the nord samples sounded far more distant, thinner, without body, no eq setting changed this. I midi-paired it with my E5 and used the audio ins of yamaha to play the Nord piano samples (bright grand, studio grand, silver grand, italian grand and others without any effects or reverb) by the yamaha speakers and using the yamaha keybed. It is present direct to my ears when playing it.

It is brilliant, warm, clear although compressed. The main piano sound is still more than sufficient to support a choir or a solo singer. I have an older yamaha p-250 with very good 30W speakers.
